THE SECRET GIFT
by Barbara Bernard

Of the many books written about the lessons learned during personal experience with the mysteries of life and death, none are more powerful or wise than Bernard's
The Secret Gift
.

Although all of us travel this road we often have little preparation for how to survive, much less thrive on the inevitable journey. --Donna M. Stephens, R.M., Med, CT

Barbara A. Bernard, M. Ed., Human Resource Development, grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. Barbara worked for the Anchorage School District for 22 years, first as a classroom teacher and then as an administrator. She has also served as a certified family mediator and as adjunct faculty at the University of Alaska.

Mid-life has been a time of many transitions for Barbara, both expected and unexpected. After 22 years in public education, Barbara started an educational consulting business in a move she describes as “shifting gears” rather than retiring. One year into the development of her new business, both of Barbara’s parents were diagnosed with terminal illness. Barbara and her family cared for them at home in the months preceding their deaths. After both of her parents died, Barbara wrote to make sense of her pain. Her reflections from this period were the inspiration for her book, The Secret Gift: Growth in Times of Loss, first published in 2005. Today Barbara’s professional life is quite different than what she imagined it would be when she first began “shifting gears”. She is delighted to have designed a life that allows her to serve as a life coach, workshop presenter, consultant, speaker and writer.

Barbara loves to create learning environments that support others in finding meaning and purpose as they progress through transitions. Barbara currently lives in Eagle River, Alaska, just down the road and around the mountain from Carole Comeau.
